9th day: Courmayeur to Val d’Isere

23 Jul

After a good breakfast, the direction was to the west at South of the Mt-Blanc massive. What a difference to the weather the evening before!

First, I wanted to get up to col des Chavannes towards La Thuile, but weather and difficulty to get up made me change my mind and took the col de la Seigne. The same used with André when we cycled around the MtBlanc.

200m before reaching the top, I saw that I had lost my right glove. No way to continue knowing that there would be a nice trail after the pass. So I let the (locked) bike there and walked 200m down again where I found it back. 😇

Then the trail down was a real dessert, especially because of the nice weather, while the sky wasn’t promising more in the south on the col des Chavannes.

The trails ended in Cité des Glaciers where I was back on the road again towards Bourg-St-Maurice. First, I had planned to stay there. The camping wasn’t really if my choice (to close to the street). And something is bouncing in my head since a few days: I needed to cycle longer (not push the bike) to get in that special condition, when you just ride and don’t feel much because you feel every part of your body).

So I started the ascension having in mind the last I was here: at that time, my partner didn’t want to do last 20km and the very next morning we had to start with cold temperatures, fog and little rain.

Finally I mad it to Val d’Isere.. Which is kind of dead in summer time. But I can recommend it: the swimming pool is free, as some of the telecabines. So if you want to practice your downhill capabilities, it could be worse coming here.

And the best hotel (price/value) found was clearly the hotel “L’avancher ***”

Tomorrow will be a day off… My muscles need it!
